A Year Ago It Was All Red . . .

. . . they were a group of women from a political family carrying the documents to file the certificates of candidacy of one of their male relatives who was running for the gubernatorial seat in the 2010 elections. The political situation was strained which was why they thought it was safe to send the women, their women lawyers and a handful of media persons. It was a long convoy of innocent civilians and their journey was met with tragedy. 57 bodies were discovered buried together with their vehicles in an empty plot beside the long road where the convoy passed. Reports had it that the convoy were met by armed men sent by the opposing candidates who did not spare anybody including the passengers of another vehicle that was merely passing on the same road. One reporter who was with the convoy is still missing! A total of 198 people were charged for the carnage and more than a hundred of them are still at large. The case is now pending in the regional trial court. . . . Today, a ceremony will be held in the same spot where the bodies were found buried while the church bells around the Philippines will toll 57 times in memory of those who died in one of the most gruesome cases of election violence in the country. A very sad post for Mary's Ruby Tuesday . . . and one that must not be forgotten until justice is served.

. . . the bell tolls for those whose memory continue to haunt us out of our apathy. . . .

I am so far from Maguindanao but I feel their pain, frustration and grief. I will take a pause today and will visit you all tomorrow ...

I remember hearing about this in the news. It's so difficult for someone like me in Canada to understand how something this horrible can happen in other places around the world. Very sad.
